SPLASH 21 MAR – 17 APR 2019

CATHY CARTER

We are delighted to welcome back to Muse, Auckland artist Cathy Carter, with her new show “Splash”, inspired by David Hockney’s iconic swimming pool paintings. Carter’s use of photography and digital collaging extends this exploration of the swimming pool as a body of water, with complex cultural, social and environmental resonances. Utilising striking and distinctive colours as well as lines from the bottom of the pool, Carter maintains her use of the perspective of an ‘aerial voyeur’ in many of the images. This provides a contemporary, drone-like perspective and a detachment that offers a space to observe our diverse relationships with swimming pools and water itself. This voyeuristic perspective challenges the viewer in respect to issues of privacy, the notion of intimate space, concerns about access and rights to water, luxury and the fun associated with swimming pools - private or public.
